Androgyny is a Girl’s Best Friend

I love understated androgyny. Pairing a completely boyish outfit with one or two hyper-feminine details is my shit. That’s why this Forever21 menswear-inspired vest looks perfect with leather oxfords and jorts (I’m completely over jean shorts too, but these boyfriend shorts are delightfully messy and still feel fresh). Take this understated outfit into high gear with some magenta Debbie Harry lipstick.

Corporate Vest

Proof that vests (despite their lack of any discernible function) can work at work. This is a business-casual “I working in media” outfit, though you could dress the vest up even more. I paired this Zara creation with a beautifully high-waisted pair of burgundy trousers and some gold-detailed heels. Add a white t-shirt or blouse, and you’re ready for a morning meeting.

Rusted to Perfection

Ugh this vest is almost too fabulous to handle. I love the rusty copper and statue of liberty green detailing, and the drapey fit is chic as hell. Throw on some fly disco pants and a mock turtleneck crop top (two of my favorite staples), and you’re ready for a night out.

Intimidating Black Leather

For those who are deeply interested in fashion, it’s sometimes about intimidation. Every once in awhile, you just want to look like a badass. What better way to channel your inner bitch than with head-to-toe black, leather, and a red lip.

Hope in reality is the worst of all evils because it prolongs the torments of man.

My natural state: comme des garcons, a bad attitude, and junk food in my mouth. New outfit post on the blog. This is just an outtake before I made some dumplings.

Beautiful textured vest paired with a feminine top and mannish pants. Contradictions are beautiful!

The Classic Denim

Throw it over a sweater in the winter or a bralette in the summer, it’s an effortlessly cool look that should be a staple in every wardrobe.  The Western floral embroidery elevates this particular incarnation of the jean vest. Yet, the floral is subtle enough to pair with anything. A little extra detail goes a long way.

What moves those of genius, what inspires their work is not new ideas, but their obsession with the idea that what has already been said is still not enough.

-Eugene Delacroix

Having style has nothing to do with trend-following or expensive designers. Most fashion icons became legends by flouting convention and finding inspiration in unexpected places. Katherine Hepburn wore mens’ suits before they became a runway staple, and Amy Winehouse dressed like a 1960’s pin-up parody. Personal style comes from specificity, a bizarre and visible preference. Mine have always been high-waisted bottoms, monochrome, and vests. I adore vests, enough to devote an entire blog to them. So here it is, an ode to my personal obsession: The Vest.
